Paulo Barreto's Home Page

Personal Information My full name is Paulo Sérgio Licciardi Messeder Barreto. I was born in Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil, on November 19, 1965, but I live in São Paulo since January 1968. I graduated with a BSc in Physics at the Instituto de Física - USP,
studied for MSc in Computer Science at the Instituto de Matemática e Estatística - USP,
and received my PhD in Engineering from the Escola Politécnica - USP.
My PhD supervisor was Hae Yong Kim (김 해용).
I am married with Cristiane Caratin Perrone Barreto
(in the above photo you see my wife and me a few minutes after our wedding ceremony on October 8, 1994). We have a son, Tomás (named after St. Thomas Aquinas), born on October 12, 1995,
and two daughters, Letícia (named after the Latin word lætitia, 'joy'), born on May 11, 1998,
and Sofia (named after the Greek word σoφíα, 'wisdom'), born on March 16, 2004. I'm currently Professor at the Department of Computer and Digital Systems Engineering
of the Escola Politécnica of the University of São Paulo. I am also a member of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR).

My Interests

Cryptography is by far my main area of research and work.
Computer science in general, but notably formal languages, compilers, data compression, and automata.
Theoretical physics (I have a BSc degree in Physics, remember?).
Musical composition. Here's one of my compositions; to hear it you will need the Noteworthy Player freeware (and please keep in mind that I'm an amateur composer).
Linguistics. This means I'm as fascinated by human languages as by formal ones (see the second item above).
